Academic and Archival Foundation
Born in Arendal in 1843, Yngvar Nielsen pursued studies in philology, earning a degree in 1865. His early professional life involved teaching at Nissens Latin School before moving to the National Archival Services of Norway, where he worked until 1869. Concurrently, he served as a librarian at the Deichman Library.

Nielsen maintained close ties to the royal house, acting as an advisor to King Oscar II. During the 1880s, he tutored Swedish princes Oscar and Eugen at the University of Christiania. His legislative career included two terms as a deputy member of the Parliament of Norway, representing the country from 1886 to 1888 and again from 1889 to 1891.
Historical Research and Publication
As a historian, his output included biographies and accounts of the political landscape. He chaired the Norwegian Historical Association and edited the journal Historisk Tidsskrift between 1903 and 1912, having previously co-edited the journal Vidar from 1887 to 1889. His significant historical publications include a three-volume biography of Johan Caspar Herman Wedel-Jarlsberg, as well as memoirs such as En Christianiensers Erindringer and Under Oscar IIs Regjering.
