Yaroslav Lopatinskyi

Ukrainian mathematician (1906–1981)

Yaroslav Lopatinskyi belongs to the mathematical record as a figure whose results outlasted the problems that prompted them.

The record lists Yaroslav Lopatinskyi as Ukrainian mathematician (1906–1981).

Yaroslav Lopatinskyi was born at Tbilisi in 1906. His recorded nationality is Russia. He studied at Baku State University.

Around the turn of the twentieth century the foundations of mathematics were under open attack, and set theory and logic became urgent questions.

His academic posts were held at Institute of Mathematics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Baku State University and Lviv University.

The recorded fields of work are mathematical analysis and theory of differential equations.

Mathematics is the one discipline whose results, once proved, are never overturned.

Recognition followed: Order of Lenin, Order of the October Revolution and State Prize of Ukrainian SSR in Science and Technology (1978).

That the work was done from Russia matters: mathematical training, institutions and the language of publication have never been evenly distributed.

Yaroslav Lopatinskyi died in 1981, aged 75. The proofs remain, and a proof does not decay - which is the particular permanence mathematics offers.
