Early Career and World Cross Country
Ayalew made her mark in international distance running early in her professional life. During the 2006 World Cross Country Championships, she placed fifth in the long race, contributing to a team victory for Ethiopia. That same year, she finished fifth in the 5000 metres at the World Junior Championships. By the close of the 2006 season, she secured a win at the Cross Internacional de Venta de Baños, finishing more than 25 seconds ahead of her closest competitor.

The 2009 World Championships in Athletics held in Berlin marked a significant performance for Ayalew, where she earned a bronze medal in the 10,000 metres. Her success in regional and continental events continued through 2011, when she secured a silver medal in the 10,000 metres at the All-Africa Games, finishing just behind Sule Utura. At the 2011 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, she achieved a sixth-place individual finish and assisted the Ethiopian women’s squad in taking team silver alongside Meselech Melkamu.
Road Race Achievements
Ayalew expanded her focus to road racing with notable results. She set a course record of 31:58 at the 2010 World 10K Bangalore, surpassing defending champion Aselefech Mergia. Later that year, she claimed victory at the Falmouth Road Race with a time of 35:46, following a runner-up performance at the Beach to Beacon race in Maine. She maintained consistency at the Delhi Half Marathon with consecutive third-place finishes. In 2014, she won the Saint Silvester Road Race, breaking a five-year winning streak previously held by Kenyan athletes.
