Academic Foundation and Early Work
Born in 1936 in Esslingen am Neckar, Haug completed his advanced studies at the Freie Universität Berlin. His academic training encompassed romance languages and religious studies. In 1966, he achieved his PhD, focusing his dissertation on the literary works of Jean-Paul Sartre and the concept of absurdity. This research provided the grounding for his subsequent career at the same university, where he held a professorship in philosophy from 1979 until he retired in 2001.

Haug is the chief editor of the journal Das Argument, a role he has held since 1958. This publication acts as the successor to the Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung, which was formerly housed at the Institute of Social Research under Max Horkheimer. Through this editorial continuity, Haug bridges contemporary discourse with the history of the Frankfurt School. In 1994, he began editing the Historisch-kritische Wörterbuch des Marxismus, a vast project aiming to provide a critical overview of Marxist terminology, with seven volumes published as of his ongoing tenure on the project.
Commodity Aesthetics and Political Activity
His 1971 publication, Kritik der Warenästhetik, introduced the concept of commodity aestheticism to international academic circles, seeing translation into multiple languages. He continued his exploration of economic and social structures in his 2003 book, High-Tech-Kapitalismus. Beyond his writing and teaching, Haug is a member of the Leibniz Society of Sciences and sits on the Scientific Advisory Board of ATTAC. In 2007, he and his wife, Frigga Haug, joined the political party Die Linke.
