Early Life and Education
Born in 1959 in Mbarara City, Byanyima attended Mount Saint Mary's College Namagunga. Following her undergraduate studies in Manchester, she completed a master’s degree in mechanical engineering at Cranfield University, focusing specifically on energy conservation. These qualifications provided the basis for her initial professional role as a flight engineer for Uganda Airlines.

Byanyima left her engineering career to join the National Resistance Army during the 1981–1986 Ugandan Bush War. Following the conflict, she transitioned into diplomacy, serving as Uganda’s ambassador to France from 1989 to 1994. Her political career included service in the Constituent Assembly that drafted the 1995 Constitution, followed by two terms as a member of parliament representing Mbarara Municipality until 2004.
Global Policy and NGO Leadership
In 2006, Byanyima joined the United Nations Development Programme as director of the Gender Team. She later moved to the non-profit sector, serving as executive director of Oxfam International from 2013 to 2019. During this tenure, she co-chaired the World Economic Forum in 2015 and accepted an appointment to the UN High-Level Panel on Access to Medicines in 2016.
Public Health Mandates
Appointed executive director of UNAIDS in August 2019, Byanyima holds the rank of United Nations Under-Secretary-General. Her work in this capacity includes advocating for generic licensing of HIV medications, such as her 2024 intervention regarding Lenacapavir at the International AIDS Conference in Munich. She simultaneously contributes to global health initiatives, including the Commission for Universal Health and the Board of the Global Fund.
