Early Education and Qualifications
Born in 1834, Ord was the son of George Ord, a surgeon practicing in Brixton. He began his formal medical training at St. Thomas' Hospital in 1852 before continuing his studies at the University of London. He attained his status as a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1855, later achieving membership in the Royal College of Physicians in 1869, followed by his election as a Fellow in 1875.

Over a fifty-year tenure at St. Thomas', Ord held various academic and clinical positions. He served sequentially as surgical registrar, house surgeon, and lecturer in both comparative anatomy and physiology. He later transitioned into medicine, holding posts as assistant physician and physician. Beyond his clinical duties, he served as the Dean of the Medical School, overseeing institutional administration and education.
Clinical Research and Medical Society
Ord maintained a rigorous publication record throughout his career. His work on colloids and crystalline form appeared in 1879, the same year he first described Ord's thyroiditis. He also authored studies on the relationship between uric acid and gout in 1874 and investigated nutritional disorders related to the nervous system in 1885. In 1883, he contributed to a committee investigating myxoedema for the Clinical Society of London. He was heavily involved in the Medical Society of London, serving as its president in 1885.
