Academic Career and Appointments
Tomaschek pursued his formal education at the University of Vienna between 1860 and 1864. His early professional life involved teaching roles within gymnasiums located in Sankt Pölten and Vienna. Following the impact of his work on Central Asian studies, he joined the University of Graz in 1877 as an associate professor, eventually reaching the rank of full professor in 1881. By 1885, he returned to the University of Vienna to serve as the chair of historical geography.

His intellectual contributions focused primarily on historical topography and ethnography, with extensive studies on Persia, Asia Minor, and the ancient Thracians. His bibliography includes the multi-volume work Die alten Thraker, published between 1893 and 1894, as well as specialized analyses on Persian desert routes and the geography of the Tabula Peutingeriana. These texts provided detailed accounts of regions he documented through meticulous historical analysis.
Institutional Recognition and Legacy
Over the course of his career, Tomaschek became a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences. He was appointed a regular member of the Vienna Academy of Sciences in 1899. In 1898, he received the Order of the Iron Crown. Following his death in Vienna in 1901, the city honored his contributions in 1933 by naming a street, Tomaschekstraße, in the district of Floridsdorf.
