Walter Mondale served as the 42nd Vice President of the United States from 1977 to 1981 under President Jimmy Carter. Early Life and Education
Born in 1928 in Ceylon, Minnesota, Mondale attended Macalester College before graduating from the University of Minnesota College of Liberal Arts in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, achieving the rank of corporal, and attended the Defense Information School between 1951 and 1952. He later earned a law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1956.

Mondale began his career as the Minnesota Attorney General, serving from 1960 to 1964. He transitioned to federal politics when he was appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1964. He held this seat through several consecutive terms, serving from 1964 to 1965, 1965 to 1967, 1969 to 1971, 1971 to 1973, and 1973 to 1975, before resigning to assume the vice presidency.
National Leadership and Diplomatic Service
After his term as Vice President ended in 1981, Mondale continued his work in public affairs and law. He was employed by the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs from 1986 to 1993 and practiced at the firm Dorsey & Whitney. President Bill Clinton later appointed him United States Ambassador to Japan, a position he held in Tokyo from 1993 to 1996. In 2008, he received the Order of the Paulownia Flowers.
