Fifty years of academic service defined the career of Walter Gage at the University of British Columbia. Beginning his tenure as an undergraduate in 1921, he evolved from a student to the institution's sixth president. Early Education and Career
Born in 1905 to Alexander and Ann, Gage attended Tecumseh Elementary and John Oliver Secondary School. He enrolled at the University of British Columbia in 1921, becoming the first in his family to attend university. He completed a Bachelor of Arts with honors in mathematics in 1925, followed by a Master of Arts in 1926. His professional career began at Victoria College, where he taught mathematics from 1927 to 1933 and served as registrar during his final four years there.

Gage returned to the University of British Columbia in 1927, maintaining his teaching role until his death in 1978. Beyond his classroom duties, he held significant administrative positions, including dean of administrative and inter-faculty affairs. These roles allowed him to implement policies designed to assist students facing financial adversity. He often provided personal financial support to those in need, ensuring they could continue their studies despite economic hardship.
Presidential Tenure and Recognition
From 1969 to 1975, Gage served as the sixth president of the University of British Columbia. This term coincided with a period of intense social change and institutional growth. Even while serving as president, he continued to teach. In 1969, he received the inaugural Walter Koerner Master Teacher Award. His contributions were recognized in 1971 when he was made a Companion of the Order of Canada. He also held an honorary LL.D. from the University of Victoria.
