Born in Kaunas in 1932, Landsbergis pursued dual interests in music and history before entering the political arena. His academic work included musicology, and he completed a doctoral thesis in 1969 followed by a doctor habilitus degree in 1994. After co-founding the Sąjūdis political movement in 1988, Landsbergis was elected as a representative to the Congress of People's Deputies of the Soviet Union. Following the 1990 elections, he assumed leadership as Chairman of the Supreme Council. During his tenure as speaker until 1992, he managed the complex logistics of national autonomy. He later helped establish the Homeland Union party in 1993, which secured a majority in the 1996 parliamentary elections. He served again as Speaker of the Seimas from 1996 to 2000.
European Parliamentary Engagement
Landsbergis transitioned to international politics through his work with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, where he served from 1993 to 1997 and again between 2000 and 2002. In 2004, he began a ten-year tenure as a Member of the European Parliament.
