Early Competitive Development
Salnikov began formal swimming instruction at age seven in Leningrad. His initial training occurred under the guidance of Igor Koshkin, who facilitated his transition to elite performance. His Olympic introduction occurred in 1976 at the Montreal Games at age 16, where he finished fifth in the 1,500-metre event while establishing a new European record for the distance.
Dominance in Distance Freestyle
Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, Salnikov secured a string of international victories, including gold medals at the 1977 European Championships and the 1978 World Championships. At the 1980 Moscow Olympics, he secured three gold medals, specifically in the 400-metre, 1,500-metre, and 4x200-metre relay. His 1,500-metre performance of 14:58.27 marked a historical milestone as the first sub-15-minute finish.

After missing the 1984 Los Angeles Games due to the Soviet boycott, Salnikov returned to international competition at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Despite skepticism regarding his age, he secured the 1,500-metre title. Following this victory, he retired from professional racing to transition into administrative and coaching roles, including head coach of the Soviet swimming team until 1990.
Administration and Academics
Salnikov holds a Candidate of Sciences in Pedagogy from the Lesgaft National State University of Physical Education, Sport and Health. His post-swimming career included service on the Soviet Olympic Committee and the FINA Athletes' Commission. In 2009, he assumed the presidency of the Russian Swimming Federation, leveraging decades of competitive experience to oversee national aquatic sports development.
