Virgilijus Alekna

A discus personal record of 73.88 meters positioned Virgilijus Alekna behind only the world records set by Jürgen Schult in 1986 and Mykolas Alekna in 2024. A native of Terpeikiai, Lithuania, born in 1972, he established himself as a dominant presence in international athletics while maintaining a long-term professional commitment to the security of his nation's leadership.

Athletic Achievements

He added a bronze medal to his collection during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His performance at the 2004 Athens Olympics yielded a 69.89-meter mark that remained an Olympic record for two decades until it was surpassed in 2024. In 2000, Track and Field News named him Athlete of the Year, and he received the Lithuanian Sportsman of the Year title four times between 2000 and 2006. In 2007, UNESCO appointed him as a Champion for Sport, and he later received the European Athletics Lifetime Achievement award in 2017.

Physiological Advantage

Standing 2.02 meters tall, Alekna possessed a physical reach that significantly aided his throwing mechanics. His armspan measured 2.24 meters, a length that purportedly allowed him to touch the windows on both sides of a bus simultaneously. His career included a sustained streak of 37 victories spanning two years, a record eventually interrupted in 2007 when he competed with an injury sustained on August 20, leading to a loss during the qualification phase on August 28.

Political Transition

Following his career in athletics, Alekna entered the Lithuanian political sphere. In 2016, he participated in the national parliamentary elections as a candidate on the Liberal Movement electoral list. Despite losing his run-off in the Naujamiestis constituency, he secured a seat in the Twelfth Seimas based on his position on the party list. He served as a member of the Seimas from 2016 to 2020, continued his tenure from 2020 to 2024, and maintained his position in 2024. His professional history also includes serving as a bodyguard for the Lithuanian Prime Minister, a role he began in 1995.

Personal and Public Honors

The government of Lithuania recognized his contributions through multiple iterations of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas, including the Grand Cross, the Commander's Grand Cross, the Commander grade, and the Knight's Cross. A graduate of the Lithuanian Sports University, Alekna is married to former long jumper Kristina Sablovskytė-Aleknienė. They have three children: Martynas, Mykolas, and Gabrielė.
