Ville Valo

Ville Valo first gained prominence as the lead singer and songwriter for HIM, a Finnish band that achieved international reach during the late 1990s and 2000s. He is responsible for the design of the heartagram, a trademarked emblem that became a pervasive symbol associated with the band's aesthetic throughout his multi-decade career in the music industry.

Early Development in Helsinki

Born in Helsinki in 1976 to a Hungarian mother and a Finnish father, Valo grew up exposed to Finnish folk music through his father's taxi radio. His interest in music solidified at age eight after hearing the Kiss album Animalize. During his school years, he attended the Helsinki Pop & Jazz Conservatory, playing bass and drums in various local groups, including B.L.O.O.D., Eloveena Boys, and Aurora, before deciding to focus entirely on his musical ambitions.

The Rise of HIM

In 1991, Valo co-founded His Infernal Majesty with Mikko Paananen. After a brief dissolution, the band reformed in 1995 under the shortened name HIM. Their 1997 debut, Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666, preceded a series of commercially successful albums including Razorblade Romance, Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights, and Love Metal. The 2005 album Dark Light marked a significant milestone, becoming the first record by a Finnish group to receive a gold certification in the United States.

Collaborative Ventures and Solo Work

Beyond his tenure with HIM, Valo maintained a busy schedule of collaborations, appearing on recordings with acts such as Apocalyptica, The 69 Eyes, and Bloodhound Gang. He served as a drummer for the side project Daniel Lioneye and released a cover of "Summer Wine" with Natalia Avelon in 2007, which reached number one in Finland and Greece. In 2020, he launched his solo project VV, releasing the debut album Neon Noir in 2023.

Final Chapters for HIM

Following the 2013 release of Tears on Tape and subsequent lineup changes, the band decided that they had reached the end of their collective creative capacity. They officially disbanded after a final tour, culminating in a performance on New Year's Eve 2017 at the annual Helldone Festival in Helsinki. Valo has continued his career as a songwriter and recording artist, receiving the Finnish National Prize in 2025.
