Artistic Foundations
Born in 1962 in Saint Petersburg, Tsoi studied at the St. Petersburg art school by Rerikh N.K. during his youth. His formal education included training at a secondary city vocational school where he learned woodcarving. By the late 1970s, his creative efforts shifted toward music, where he began writing original songs and collaborating with figures in the Leningrad underground. These early experiences provided the lyrical and thematic basis for his later contributions to the rock genre.

In 1981, Tsoi co-founded the group Garin i giperboloydy, which he later renamed Kino. Following the release of his debut album in 1982, the band gained momentum within the Leningrad Rock Club. The addition of guitarist Yuri Kasparyan in 1983 solidified the band's creative core. Throughout this decade, the band recorded ten albums, gradually expanding their influence beyond the city's apartment concert circuit through consistent touring and the distribution of their demo recordings.
Cultural Reach and Final Years
Tsoi’s profile expanded significantly after Kino appeared in the 1987 film Assa, followed by his leading role in the 1988 film The Needle. This period solidified his stature as an actor and songwriter, culminating in high-profile performances at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium. His career ended prematurely in 1990 when he died in a traffic collision in the Tukums District of Latvia. His body was interred at the Bogoslovskoe cemetery.
