Victor Goryunov

Surface projection singularities became the subject of a Ph.D. thesis completed in 1981 at Lomonosov State University by Victor Goryunov. Working under the supervision of Vladimir Arnold, he established a career focused on geometry and singularity theory, eventually transitioning from his early academic training in the Soviet Union to a long-term position at the University of Liverpool.

Academic Foundation

Goryunov pursued his higher education at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at Moscow State University. His doctoral research provided the initial framework for his ongoing inquiry into singularity theory. The completion of his degree in 1981 marked the start of a career that would later see him contribute to the editorial advisory board of the Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society.

Research Trajectory

Throughout his career, Goryunov has expanded his research interests to include finite type invariants and Legendrian knots. His work in Lagrangian and Legendrian geometry has achieved recognition as a standard reference point for others in the field. Since 1978, he has produced more than 50 peer-reviewed articles, contributing to the global body of literature regarding geometric structures and singularity phenomena.

Collaborative Scholarship

Collaboration remains a significant component of his mathematical output. Goryunov acted as a co-author for two major volumes in the Springer series titled Dynamical Systems, specifically focusing on local and global singularity theory as well as classification and applications. These texts, co-authored with V. I. Arnold, O. V. Lyashko, and V. A. Vassiliev, reflect the broader scope of his contributions to the field.
