Early Life and Medical Career
The son of a merchant from Leipnik, Adler moved to the Leopoldstadt borough of Vienna at the age of three. He attended the Schottenstift gymnasium before enrolling at the University of Vienna, where he focused on chemistry and medicine. He earned a doctorate and served as an assistant to Theodor Meynert in the psychiatric department of the General Hospital, residing between 1882 and 1889 at 19 Berggasse in the Alsergrund district.

Adler initially involved himself with the German national movement, contributing to the 1882 Linz Program. A shift occurred as he turned toward social activism, publishing the Marxist journal Gleichheit in 1886. After the publication was banned, he launched the Arbeiter-Zeitung in 1889. His activities led to multiple arrests and a nine-month prison sentence. In 1888, he convened a meeting in Hainfeld to form the Social Democratic Workers' Party, serving as its first chairman.
Parliamentary Service and Foreign Policy
Elected to the Imperial Council in 1905, Adler advocated for universal suffrage, a goal realized during the term of Minister President Max Wladimir von Beck in 1906. Following the 1907 elections, his party gained significant influence within the Cisleithanian legislative framework. During the final months of World War I, he joined the Austrian government and sought the unification of the state with Germany, but died of heart failure on 11 November 1918.
