Leadership of the Family Firm
Born in 1441 in Augsburg, Ulrich Fugger the Elder was the eldest son of Jakob Fugger the Elder and Barbara Bäsinger. Following the death of his father in 1469, he assumed formal leadership of the family enterprise. This tenure lasted until his death in 1510. Throughout his professional life, he occupied the roles of merchant, banker, and panel, navigating the complex financial environment of late fifteenth-century Germany.

The Fugger business operated within a framework defined by European trade, where trust served as the primary asset for success. Ulrich Fugger the Elder worked alongside his brothers, including Jakob Fugger the Younger, Georg Fugger, Georg Andreas, Johann, and Peter. While he occupied the role of family head, historical assessments note that his individual business skills did not achieve the same prominence as those of his brother Jakob.
Personal Life and Death
In 1479, he married Veronika Lauginger. The couple had five children: Anna, born in 1484; Ursula, born in 1485; Ulrich II, born in 1490; Sybille, born in 1493; and Hieronymus, born in 1499. Ulrich Fugger the Elder died in 1510 in his home city of Augsburg at the age of 69. His death occurred following a medical operation intended to remove a bladder stone. He was buried in the Fugger Chapel.
