Military Career and Service
Gabbard enlisted in the Hawaii Army National Guard in 2003. She completed a 12-month deployment in Iraq from 2004 to 2005, where she earned the Combat Medical Badge. In 2007, she graduated at the top of her class from the Alabama Military Academy officer training program. By 2008, she was stationed in Kuwait as an Army Military Police officer. She transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve in 2020 and achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel in 2021, eventually commanding the 1st Battalion, 354th Regiment.

In 2002, Gabbard was elected to the Hawaii House of Representatives. She served as a Honolulu council member from 2010 to 2012 before moving to federal office. During her congressional tenure from 2013 to 2021, she held seats on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Initially a member of the Democratic Party and vice-chair of the Democratic National Committee, she transitioned to independent status in 2022 and joined the Republican Party in 2024.
Intelligence Leadership
Nominated by Donald Trump, Gabbard secured Senate confirmation to lead the intelligence community in February 2025. Her tenure focused on national security strategy until her resignation in June 2026, which she attributed to family reasons. Throughout her career, she received numerous military honors, including the Meritorious Service Medal, the Achievement Medal, the Commendation Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
