Tsai Wan-lin

Taiwanese businessman and billionaire (1924–2004)

A fortune of 12.2 billion US dollars earned Tsai Wan-lin the title of the fifth richest person globally in 1996. Throughout his career in Taiwan, he evolved from a modest vegetable seller into the founder of the Lin Yuan Group, establishing an expansive financial and insurance empire that dominated the local market for decades.

Early Life and Education

Born in 1924 within Miaoli City, Tsai Wan-lin spent his childhood in a farming family. His early years were defined by labor in Taipei, where he sold vegetables and soybeans alongside his brothers. He attended the Taipei Municipal Chengyuan High School before entering the workforce as an entrepreneur.

Founding the Financial Empire

In 1960, Tsai joined the Tenth Credit Cooperative in Taipei. Two years later, he partnered with his brother to establish Cathay Life Insurance, an organization that eventually became the largest life insurance company in Taiwan. Following a 1979 split of the family business, he retained control of Cathay Life Insurance, subsequently launching the Lin Yuan Group. This conglomerate grew rapidly, and its subsidiary, Cathay Financial Holdings, emerged as the nation's largest financial holding entity.

Public Standing and Later Years

Tsai appeared on the Forbes billionaire list for the first time in 1987. His influence extended to government service when he accepted the position of senior advisor to the president of the Republic of China in 2000. During his life, he also founded the Cathay General Hospital in 1977. He remained the wealthiest individual in Taiwan until his death in 2004, at which time his net worth was valued at 4.6 billion US dollars.

Personal Life and Death

Married to Chou Pao-chin, Tsai fathered seven children. After enduring six years of hospitalization, he passed away from heart disease in 2004 at the age of 81 inside the Cathay General Hospital in Taipei. His final resting place is his private tomb.
