Tito Vilanova

Spanish footballer and manager (1968-2014)

Francesc Vilanova Bayó, known as Tito, registered 26 appearances in La Liga as a central midfielder during a professional playing career that spanned from his youth years at FC Barcelona until his retirement with UDA Gramenet in 2001. His legacy rests primarily on his transition to management and his role in one of the most successful periods in Spanish football history.

Early Career and Playing Experience

Born in 1968 in Bellcaire d'Empordà, Vilanova progressed through the youth ranks of FC Barcelona. After leaving in 1990, he joined UE Figueres, contributing to a third-place finish in the 1991–92 Segunda División campaign. He later moved to RC Celta de Vigo for three seasons. Following further stints at CD Badajoz, RCD Mallorca, UE Lleida, and Elche CF, he finished his playing career in December 2001. Notably, while at Lleida in 1998, he scored against a side coached by José Mourinho.

Transition to Coaching

Vilanova began his coaching career in the 2003–04 season with FC Palafrugell before serving as technical director at Terrassa FC. He eventually rejoined FC Barcelona to assist Pep Guardiola with the B team. In 2008, the pair moved to the first team. During this tenure, the squad secured 14 titles, including a historic treble consisting of the Copa del Rey, La Liga, and the UEFA Champions League.

Success as First-Team Manager

Appointed head coach in June 2012, Vilanova led the team to the 2012–13 La Liga title. That season, he achieved a total of 100 points, winning the league by a record margin of 15 points. In a match against Levante UD on 25 November 2012, he fielded 11 academy graduates simultaneously. For his performance, he received the Miguel Muñoz Trophy for the 2012–13 campaign.

Health Struggles and Passing

He underwent surgery in December 2012 and stepped away for chemotherapy and radiotherapy, with Jordi Roura serving as interim coach. Vilanova returned to the bench in March 2013 but resigned in July 2013 due to a relapse. He died in Barcelona on 25 April 2014 at the age of 45.
