Early Development and Junior Success
Safin entered the sport of fencing after a coach presented the discipline at his school. By 2009, he joined the junior Russian national team. His early competitive results included an individual bronze and a team silver at the 2011 U23 European Championships in Kazan. In 2012, he claimed a team silver medal at the Junior European Championships before achieving the title of Junior World champion in Moscow that same year.

The 2013-14 season marked Safin's entry into the senior ranks. He secured a victory at the Challenge Revenu by defeating Andrea Baldini. At the 2014 European Championships held in Strasbourg, he reached the table of 16 and contributed to a bronze medal performance in the team event. During the 2014 World Championships in Kazan, he advanced to the semifinals after overcoming Peter Joppich, eventually earning a bronze medal following a narrow defeat to Ma Jianfei. The Russian Fencing Federation subsequently named him the breakthrough athlete of the year.
Olympic and Continental Achievements
Safin has competed as a two-time Olympian. His major accolades include a team gold medal at the 2016 Olympics and an individual bronze at the same games.
