Timothy Dalton began his professional acting trajectory by enrolling at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1962. After departing the institution in 1966 to join the Birmingham Repertory Theatre ensemble, he rapidly transitioned into film, debuting as Philip II of France in the 1968 historical drama The Lion in Winter.
Early Career and Period Dramas
Following his cinematic debut, Dalton solidified his profile in historical productions. His work included portraying Heathcliff in the 1970 version of Wuthering Heights and the Cavalier commander Prince Rupert of the Rhine in the film Cromwell. By 1971, he shifted focus toward stage work, performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company before returning to film with Mary, Queen of Scots.

Dalton built a substantial television resume throughout the 1970s and 1980s. He starred as Oliver Secombe in the series Centennial and took the title role in the BBC serial Jane Eyre. His American career gained momentum with his appearance in the 1978 film Sextette. He also played Rhett Butler in the 1994 miniseries Scarlett and later portrayed Sir Malcolm Murray in Penny Dreadful.
The James Bond Tenure
After declining earlier opportunities to portray James Bond because he felt too young, Dalton accepted the role in 1986. He starred in The Living Daylights in 1987, which achieved critical success and strong box-office returns. His second outing as 007, Licence to Kill, followed in 1989. The film faced challenges in the United States market, partly due to a modified marketing approach.
Later Productions
Dalton remained active across various genres into the 21st century. His film credits include roles in The Rocketeer, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, Hot Fuzz, and The Tourist. In recent years, he has appeared as Rassilon in Doctor Who, the Chief in Doom Patrol, Peter Townsend in The Crown, and Donald Whitfield in the western series 1923.
