The German entrepreneur Thomas Haffa rose to prominence through the creation of EM.TV, an enterprise that experienced a meteoric trajectory on the Neuer Markt stock exchange before its eventual decline. Born in 1952 in Kressbronn am Bodensee, he navigated a career path that transitioned from traditional corporate roles to large-scale international media and marketing acquisitions.
Early Career and Foundation
After completing his schooling and growing up in Pfaffenhofen, Haffa pursued an apprenticeship as a wholesaler and salesman at a BMW dealer. His corporate experience expanded in 1973 when he began working as a sales assistant at IBM. By the early 1980s, he joined the Kirch Group, focusing on the development of the video game entity Taurus Video. He spent several years directing music publishing and merchandising firms before establishing EM-Entertainment Munich, Merchandising, Film und Fernseh GmbH in 1989 alongside his brother Florian and Haim Saban.

The company, widely known as EM.TV, gained significant momentum following its public listing on October 30, 1997, where it debuted at 0.38 euros per share. Haffa aggressively expanded the firm's portfolio by securing rights to notable properties such as the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles, Maya the Honey Bee, The Flintstones, and Alfred J. Kwak. In 2000, he facilitated a 3.3 billion euro acquisition for half of the marketing rights to Formula 1 and purchased the parent company of the Muppet Show, pushing the share price to a peak of 110 euros in March 2000.
Regulatory and Legal Challenges
The company’s fortunes shifted in the autumn of 2000 as leadership repeatedly adjusted earnings expectations downward, causing the share price to collapse below 20 euros. Investigations revealed that Thomas and Florian Haffa had sold significant portions of their holdings prior to the negative disclosures, with Thomas violating a designated holding period in February 2000. He resigned as Chairman of the Board on July 25, 2001. By April 2003, he received a 1.2 million euro fine for misleading shareholders, a sentence later upheld by the Federal Court of Justice in 2004 and ultimately confirmed by the Federal Constitutional Court in 2006.
Post-EM.TV Ventures
Following his exit from the media sector, Haffa involved himself in diverse business interests. In 2004, he led an investor group that acquired the operations of the insolvent commercial vehicle manufacturer Kögel Trailer in Ulm, though the company filed for insolvency again in 2009. He later assumed the role of managing director at the Munich-based Air Independence. By 2010, his portfolio included a majority stake in the teleshopping channel Channel 21, as well as the acquisition of the yacht brokerage firm Dahm International alongside his wife, Gabriele.
