Theodor Kittelsen

Norwegian artist (1857–1914)

Theodor Kittelsen is remembered for work the next generation could not ignore.

The record lists Theodor Kittelsen as Norwegian artist (1857–1914).

Theodor Kittelsen was born at Kragerø in 1857. His recorded nationality is Norway. He trained at Academy of Fine Arts, Munich.

The nineteenth century broke the academy's authority: independent exhibitions, dealers and the beginnings of modernism.

He worked as painter, illustrator and cartoonist.

A painting outlives the argument about it, which is the only durable form of an artistic reputation.

Recognition followed: Knight of the Order of St. Olav‎.

That the work was made in Norway shaped it: artistic traditions, academies and the galleries that decide what is seen have never been evenly distributed.

Theodor Kittelsen died in 1914, aged 57. The work remains, hanging in collections that outlived both the artist and the market that first priced it.
