Theodor Gomperz

Austrian philosopher (1832-1912)

Theodor Gomperz produced his magnum opus, Griechische Denker, following a career dedicated to the systematic study of ancient philosophy and classical philology. Born in 1832 in Brno, within the Austrian Empire, he navigated the academic landscape of the nineteenth century as an influential professor and researcher who shaped the interpretation of Greek thought for future generations of scholars.

Academic Foundation and Career

Gomperz underwent his initial studies at the Philosophical Institute in Brno between 1847 and 1849. He subsequently attended the University of Vienna, where he worked under the guidance of Hermann Bonitz. After completing his degree in 1867, he served as a Privatdozent before securing an appointment as a professor of classical philology in 1873. During his tenure at the University of Vienna, he established himself as a prominent figure in the institution until his eventual resignation, which allowed him to focus exclusively on his research and writing.

Philological Contributions

His scholarly output was prolific, spanning various aspects of Greek literature and thought. He authored numerous critical works, including Demosthenes der Staatsmann and Philodemi de ira liber, both published in 1864. His research into the Herculanean papyri resulted in publications such as Herculanische Studien and Zu Philodems Büchern von der Musik. Additionally, he translated the collected works of John Stuart Mill into German, an undertaking that spanned twelve volumes from 1869 to 1880, and authored a biography of Mill in 1889.

Recognition and Public Life

Gomperz received significant formal recognition for his contributions to classical studies. He was elected a full member of the Vienna Academy of Sciences in 1882 and maintained correspondent status with several international societies, including the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences, and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Beyond his academic role, he participated in political life, becoming a member of the House of Lords in Austria in 1901. He received honorary degrees from the University of Königsberg and the universities of Dublin and Cambridge.
