Teodor von Burg: Serbia's Six-Medal Olympiad Record-Breaker
Of the roughly 15,000 teenagers who competed in international math olympiads over five decades, only three had ever collected four gold medals before Teodor von Burg did it in 2012. By the time he boarded a plane for Oxford that autumn, he had turned a Belgrade childhood of private tutoring into the most decorated competitive mathematics career on record.
A Belgrade Prodigy's Private Education
Von Burg grew up in Belgrade, Serbia, and attended the city's Mathematical Gymnasium, a specialized school built for students gifted in mathematics, physics, and computer science — the kind of institution that exists specifically to catch prodigies before they outgrow ordinary classrooms. But he has credited much of his mathematical formation to something outside that school system entirely: 4.5 years of private tutoring under Dr. Vladimir Janković, a mentor whose one-on-one instruction shaped him well before he became a national name. Building an Olympiad Record From the Ground Up
Von Burg's international debut came in 2007, when he traveled to Vietnam for the International Mathematical Olympiad as a seventh-grader — startlingly young for a competition typically dominated by students on the verge of university. He kept returning. Over six consecutive years, from 2007 to 2012, he accumulated four gold medals, one silver, and one bronze — six IMO medals in total, a haul that made him, at the time, the highest-ranked competitor in the International Mathematical Olympiad's Hall of Fame. His final victory came at the 53rd IMO in Mar del Plata, Argentina, in July 2012. In doing so he surpassed the previous record holders, Germany's Lisa Sauermann and Christian Reiher, each of whom had five medals. The IMO was only the most visible part of the record. At the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad, von Burg collected six medals — three gold, three silver — and became the first competitor in the tournament's history to finish in absolute first place outright. At the Junior Balkan Mathematical Olympiad he added four more medals: two gold, one silver, one bronze. Locally, across 57 mathematics competitions inside Serbia, he won 44 first prizes, 11 second prizes, and two third prizes. Across every level of competition — local, regional, and international — his total exceeded 110 events and more than 130 awards and medals.
Honors at Home
Serbia recognized the scale of what von Burg had done with a cluster of formal honors: the Saint Sava Prize for his educational contribution, a charter from the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts acknowledging his mathematical achievements, and the "Karić Brothers" Prize for scientific research. These were the kind of institutional acknowledgments — academy charters, named prizes — usually reserved for adult scholars, awarded instead to a teenager still finishing high school.
An Unhappy Verdict on Investment in Talent
Von Burg's success also became a pointed commentary on how Serbia treats its most gifted young people. Serbian media coverage of his final IMO victory noted his mother's open dissatisfaction with the country's lack of support for young mathematical talent, and reports at the time described the family signaling that he did not intend to return to Serbia after leaving to study abroad. It was a familiar story in small countries that produce outsized competitive talent: the medals came home, but the infrastructure to keep that talent working locally did not follow.
Oxford and a New Chapter
After finishing his medal-winning run at the 2012 IMO, von Burg enrolled at Exeter College, University of Oxford, to study mathematics — trading the olympiad circuit's timed proof-writing for the slower, deeper work of a research-oriented mathematics degree. The move followed a well-worn path for elite olympiad competitors, many of whom find that the skills rewarded by competition — speed, cleverness, a nose for the trick that unlocks a problem — only partially overlap with the skills rewarded by original research.
Why Teodor Is Called a Genius
The case for calling von Burg a genius rests on something unusually quantifiable for a cognitive trait: an olympiad record that, by the numbers reported at the time, no one else on the planet had matched. Four IMO golds, a clean sweep of the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad's top spot, and a personal tally of well over a hundred competition wins are not achievements that can be talked into existence by hype — they are the product of solving harder problems, faster and more reliably, than every other teenager entered against him. The specific cognitive quality on display is competitive problem-solving under time pressure: recognizing which of a handful of techniques cracks an unfamiliar problem within a few hours, repeated across dozens of competitions and years without a slump.
The honest counter-case is that none of the source material describing von Burg's career actually uses the word "genius" to characterize him, nor does it document any breakthrough in mathematical research to set beside the competition record. What is documented is a competition résumé, an academy charter, and a mother's frustration with her country's support systems — not a body of original mathematical work.
