Early Influences and Artistic Formation
Born in 1956 in Goderich, Ontario, Nasmith moved frequently during childhood as the son of a Royal Canadian Air Force officer. A period spent in eastern France preceded the family's eventual move to Toronto. During his high school years, he entered a four-year commercial art program. It was during this time he encountered The Lord of the Rings, which sparked an immediate interest in illustrating mythic landscapes. His early correspondence with Tolkien, who reviewed his painting of The Unexpected Party, provided formative encouragement to pursue a literal style.

Nasmith initially intended to pursue automotive illustration but pivoted to architectural rendering as industry demand for photography increased. This technical background informed his detailed approach to fantasy landscapes, which utilized Victorian neoclassical and luminist styles. His work gained prominence through a series of Tolkien Calendars spanning from 1987 to 2010. By 1996, he began a collaboration with Christopher Tolkien to illustrate The Silmarillion, which was published in 1998 with an expanded edition following in 2004.
Diversification into Music and Modern Fantasy
Beyond visual arts, Nasmith is a musician, guitarist, and tenor. His debut album, The Hidden Door: Songs in the Key of Enchantment, appeared in 2007. He has also collaborated with Alex Lewis on a song cycle concerning Beren and Lúthien. In the realm of George R. R. Martin, Nasmith produced over 80 illustrations for a two-volume edition of A Game of Thrones. He contributed designs for castles in The World of Ice and Fire and provided promotional artwork for The Lord of the Rings Online between 2015 and 2017.
