Born in Southampton in 1912, Edward Joseph Drake began his playing days at Winchester City while employed as a gas-meter reader. He joined Southampton in June 1931, quickly establishing himself as a reliable centre forward. In March 1934, Arsenal secured his services for £6,500. His impact was immediate; during the 1934–35 season, he scored 42 league goals in 41 appearances, setting a club record that persists. Across his Arsenal tenure, which lasted until his retirement following a spinal injury in 1945, he earned five England caps and scored 139 goals in 184 matches.

Drake transitioned to coaching after his retirement, leading Hendon and Reading before his appointment as Chelsea manager in June 1952. He implemented a rigorous training regime focused on ballwork and overhauled the club's scouting, emphasizing reliable personnel over high-profile names.
