Steven Moffat is a Scottish screenwriter and producer who emerged from a teaching career to become a prominent figure in British television. Early Career and Education
Born in Paisley in 1961, Moffat studied at the University of Glasgow and subsequently spent three and a half years working as an English teacher at Cowdenknowes High School in Greenock. His early creative output included the play War Zones, performed at the 1985 Glasgow Mayfest and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, alongside a musical titled Knifer. His transition into television writing was facilitated by his father, who introduced his sample scripts to producers.

Moffat gained early recognition for writing all forty-three episodes of the teen drama Press Gang, which aired on ITV from 1989 to 1993. Following this success, he developed several sitcoms, including Joking Apart and Chalk. The latter series drew upon his own experiences in the education sector. Throughout the 1990s, he also contributed scripts to the anthology series Murder Most Horrid.
Science Fiction and Global Recognition
A lifelong fan of the franchise, Moffat contributed short fiction to Virgin Books before writing the comedic sketch The Curse of Fatal Death for the 1999 Comic Relief telethon. His involvement with the BBC series Doctor Who expanded significantly in 2004, leading to his tenure as showrunner and executive producer from 2010 to 2017. During this period, he received multiple Hugo Awards for his work on the series. He is also recognized for co-creating the crime drama Sherlock and writing for international productions including Dracula, The Time Traveler's Wife, and Inside Man.
