A 17.4 percent stake in BMW became the foundation of Stefan Quandt's industrial holdings when he inherited the shares following his father's death in 1982. Born in 1966 in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, he eventually expanded this interest to a 23.7 percent holding, establishing a significant presence in the German automotive sector and beyond.
Education and Early Career
Quandt attended the Kaiserin-Friedrich-Gymnasium before completing studies in economics and engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology between 1987 and 1993. His professional career began with a tenure at the Boston Consulting Group in Munich from 1993 to 1994. He subsequently moved to Hong Kong, where he served as a marketing manager for the Datacard Group from 1994 to 1996.

Upon joining the BMW supervisory board in 1997, Quandt deepened his involvement in the company his father Herbert Quandt had saved from bankruptcy in 1959. Following the death of his mother, Johanna Quandt, in 2015, his voting stake briefly exceeded 30 percent, triggering a mandatory takeover offer requirement under German regulations, from which he later requested an exemption. By 2018, his ownership reached 25.83 percent, granting him a substantial blocking stake and the position of deputy chairman of the supervisory board.
Diversified Holdings and Investments
Through his holding company Delton AG, established in 1989, Quandt manages various enterprises, including Biologische Heilmittel Heel GmbH and Logwin AG. His secondary investment vehicle, Aqton SE, focuses on renewable energy and technology, holding interests in firms such as Heliatek and Solarwatt. Beyond these holdings, he has participated in corporate governance for institutions including the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Stiftung Charité.
Family History and Public Scrutiny
In 2007, the documentary The Silence of the Quandts brought national attention to the historical conduct of the Quandt family during the Second World War, specifically regarding the use of slave labour. Following the film's release, family members commissioned a 1,200-page historical study by Joachim Scholtyseck, which was published in 2011. The report identified deep links between the family's past business operations and Nazi crimes.
