Early Development and Education
Raised as a Catholic, Callow attended the London Oratory School in West Brompton before briefly studying at Queen's University Belfast. During his time in Northern Ireland, he participated in the gay liberation movement. He later committed to three years of formal training at the Drama Centre London to refine his acting craft.

Callow gained recognition for originating the title role in Peter Shaffer’s play Amadeus in 1979 at the National Theatre. His stage presence continued throughout the following decades, with notable performances in The Relapse and the 2009 production of Waiting for Godot. He also directed various works, including the 1992 musical Carmen Jones and productions at the Lyric Hammersmith.
Film and Television Contributions
His cinematic career includes appearances in 1985's A Room with a View and 1994's Four Weddings and a Funeral. On television, he portrayed Tom Chance in the series Chance in a Million and the Duke of Sandringham in Outlander between 2014 and 2016.
