Foundational Training and Early Appearances
Born in 1897 in Tbilisi, Mammadova displayed musical aptitude early in her childhood. Her formal training began with attempts to study in Italy, supported initially by sponsors before she relocated to the Kiev Conservatory, now known as the Ukrainian National Academy of Music. During this period, she established a professional relationship with the composer Reinhold Glière. Their collaboration regarding Azeri folk music later influenced Glière's composition Shakh-Senem, which he dedicated to her.

Mammadova spent the 1920s establishing an international reputation. Between 1921 and the early 1930s, she toured cities including Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Paris, Milan, Tabriz, and Tbilisi. Her repertoire focused on classical opera arias, including roles in La traviata, The Barber of Seville, Rigoletto, and Les Huguenots. She finalized her formal vocal studies at the Milan Conservatory between 1927 and 1930 before returning to Baku to resume her career at the State Opera and Ballet Theatre.
Educational Leadership and Administration
Beyond the stage, Mammadova played a critical role in structuring Azerbaijan's musical infrastructure. In 1923, she founded the Musical Notes Publishing House and the Baku Theatrical College, an institution currently known as the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Arts. Her administrative influence expanded when she served as the director of the Azerbaijan State Opera and Ballet Theatre from 1939 to 1945. She also served as the Chair of the Vocal Department at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory, where she taught until her death in 1981.
Public Recognition and Political Service
Mammadova’s contributions to Soviet and Azerbaijani culture were recognized through multiple state honors. She received the title of Honored Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1933, followed by People's Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1934 and People's Artist of the USSR in 1938. Her state service included the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labour, and the Order of the Badge of Honour. She additionally served as a member of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan.
