Sergej Chernyshov

Soviet restorer and architect (1881-1963)

In the history of building, Sergej Chernyshov is one of the names that keeps returning.

The record lists Sergej Chernyshov as Soviet restorer and architect (1881-1963).

Sergej Chernyshov was born at Alexandrovka in 1881. His recorded nationality is Soviet Union. He trained at Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture and Higher Art School at the Imperial Academy of Arts.

Modernism rejected ornament and historical style, arguing that a building should express its structure and its function - a claim contested ever since.

He is recorded as restorer, architect and urban planner.

His work is associated with neoclassicism and stalinist empire style.

Among his best-known works are main building of Moscow State University and Main Building of the Ural State Technical University. An architect is judged by how a building is used a century after the drawings.

Recognition followed: Stalin Prize, Order of Lenin, Order of the Red Banner of Labour and Order of the Badge of Honour.

That the work was built in Soviet Union shaped it: climate, materials, planning law and who holds the budget all decide what can actually be built.

Sergej Chernyshov died in 1963, aged 82. The buildings remain, still in use by people who never knew the name - which is the particular afterlife architecture offers.
