Serg Bell, formerly known as Sergey Mikhaylovich Belousov, holds more than 350 patents and maintains an h-index of 50. A computer scientist and physicist by training, he has launched numerous global technology enterprises from his base in Singapore, focusing primarily on data protection, cloud virtualization, and quantum computing investment.
Early Development and Academic Foundation
Born in 1971 in Leningrad, Bell attended the 45th Physics-Mathematics School before enrolling at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. He graduated in 1992 with a bachelor's degree in physics, later securing a master's degree in physics and electrical engineering in 1995. He eventually earned a Ph.D. in computer science in 2007. Moving to Singapore in 1994, he acquired Singaporean citizenship in 2001.

Bell initiated his professional career in 1992 at the Russian firm Sunrise, where he expanded operations across 10 subsidiaries. After moving on, he founded Solomon Software SEA. In 2000, he established SWsoft, a company specializing in server automation and virtualization. This firm served as the parent for entities such as Parallels, Inc. and Acronis. His company Virtuozzo, originally a unit within SWsoft, pioneered commercially available operating system-level virtualization containers before spinning off as an independent entity in 2015.
Acronis and Strategic Executive Roles
Acronis emerged from SWsoft in 2001 and reorganized as an independent data protection firm in 2003. Bell served on the board since 2002 and held the CEO position from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2013 to 2021. He eventually transitioned to the role of Chief Research Officer. Simultaneously, at Parallels, Inc., he served as CEO, chief architect, and executive chairman of the board, overseeing operations across multiple continents.
Investment and Academic Ventures
In 2010, Bell co-founded Runa Capital with university colleagues, raising approximately $500 million for four funds and completing over 100 early-stage investments before his departure in 2023. He also co-founded QWave Capital in 2012 and Acumatica in 2007. His academic initiatives include founding the Schaffhausen Institute of Technology in 2019 and becoming a major shareholder in Constructor University in Germany.
