Segenet Kelemu

Ethiopian plant pathologist

The first woman from her region to enroll at Addis Ababa University in 1974, Segenet Kelemu transitioned from selling farm produce in Finote Selam markets to conducting global molecular plant pathology research. Her career addresses agricultural constraints across Africa, Asia, and Latin America through the application of advanced biological sciences and strategic institutional leadership.

Early Academic Development

Born in 1957, Kelemu learned about the labor-intensive realities of agriculture while assisting her mother with farm sales. She demonstrated academic aptitude early, leading to her attendance at Addis Ababa University from 1974 to 1979 where she finished at the top of her class. She later expanded her expertise through postgraduate studies, obtaining a master's degree from Montana State University between 1983 and 1985 and a doctorate in molecular biology and plant pathology from Kansas State University in 1989.

Following her postdoctoral research on molecular pathogenesis, she focused on developing novel disease control strategies intended to improve crop health and yield stability in challenging environments.

Institutional Leadership

Kelemu returned to Africa in 2007 to lead the Biosciences eastern and central Africa Hub, a tenure lasting until 2012. She subsequently served as Vice President of Programs at the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa from 2012 to 2013. In 2013, she began her tenure as Director General of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology, focusing on the study of arthropods to support agricultural productivity.

Professional Honors

Her contributions to science have earned numerous international distinctions. These include the 2006 Friendship Award, the 2011 TWAS Prize for Agricultural Sciences, and the 2014 L'Oréal-UNESCO Award For Women in Science. She holds fellowships with the African Academy of Sciences, The World Academy of Sciences, and the Royal Society, to which she was elected in 2026.
