Early Development and New York Theatre
Born in St. Louis in 1954 to Sally and Joseph Stewart Bakula, he attended Kirkwood High School and Jefferson College before enrolling at the University of Kansas. He eventually departed academia to pursue performance full-time, moving to New York City in 1976. His Broadway debut followed in 1982 with the musical Is There Life After High School? He received a Drama Desk Award nomination for his ensemble work in the 1985 off-Broadway production of Three Guys Naked from the Waist Down, which facilitated his move to Los Angeles.

His performance as Dr. Sam Beckett on the science fiction series Quantum Leap, which aired from 1989 to 1993, brought him widespread recognition. The role resulted in four Primetime Emmy Award nominations and the 1992 Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series Drama. He later transitioned into comedic work as Peter Hunt on Murphy Brown and starred as Jonathan Archer in the science fiction series Star Trek: Enterprise from 2001 to 2005.

His filmography includes roles in American Beauty as Jim Olmeyer and the 1998 feature Major League: Back to the Minors. Between 2014 and 2021, he portrayed Special Agent Dwayne Cassius Pride on the procedural drama NCIS: New Orleans.
