Academic Foundation
Born in 1963 in Katowice, Skrzypek pursued an extensive multidisciplinary education. He graduated from the Silesian University of Technology before securing an MBA from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Before his central banking role, Skrzypek held multiple administrative and financial positions. He served in the Supreme Chamber of Control and occupied roles within the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management. His career also included a period at Polish State Railways and an advisory role at the insurance company PZU between May 2000 and June 2001. Between 2002 and 2005, he functioned as a deputy to the Mayor of Warsaw, overseeing financial policy, investment projects, and corporate governance. He later served as the acting President of the managing board of PKO BP, Poland's largest bank.
The 2010 Smolensk Tragedy
On 10 April 2010, Skrzypek died in the Polish Air Force Tu-154 crash near Smolensk. The aircraft was transporting a delegation of Polish notables, including President Lech Kaczyński, to a ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the Katyń massacre. His sudden death necessitated the appointment of Piotr Wiesiolek as acting successor. Posthumously, on 16 April 2010, Skrzypek was awarded the Commander with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
