Sandra Nurmsalu rose to regional prominence in 2007 as a participant in the televised singing competition Kaks takti ette. During the program, she formed the group Urban Symphony, an ensemble that integrated classical string arrangements with electronic elements. This distinctive crossover sound subsequently defined her professional output and informed her performances on international stages.
Early Musical Training
Born in 1988 in the Estonian village of Alavere, Nurmsalu began her formal musical development at a school in Kose, where she studied the violin. Her background includes extensive work with folk ensembles, spending seven years with the children’s group Pillipiigad followed by three years in the group Virre. As a teenager, she performed in the pop trio Pink Tank. She completed her formal education at the Georg Ots Music School in Tallinn, graduating in 2008.

In 2007, Nurmsalu joined with other string musicians to compete in Kaks takti ette, finishing in fourth place. She signed with Moonwalk Records and, alongside Urban Symphony, entered the first Eesti Laul in 2009. The group won the competition with the track Rändajad, composed by Sven Lõhmus. This victory secured them a place in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 held in Moscow. Urban Symphony placed sixth in the final with 129 points, marking the best performance for Estonia in the contest since 2002.
Solo Career and Transitions
Following a two-year hiatus that began in 2010 to focus on motherhood, Nurmsalu returned to professional music in 2012. She collaborated on the single Sel teel and established her own label, Muusikalind. Her later work included a national tour and participation in Eesti Laul in 2014 and 2019. In 2014, she reached the finals with Kui tuuled pöörduvad, which became a top-five hit in Estonia, though she eventually departed from Moonwalk Records.
