Samuel Eto'o, born in 1981 in Douala, Cameroon, established himself as one of the most prolific strikers in international football history. Over a career spanning top European leagues and numerous continental tournaments, he transitioned from a precocious youth talent into a record-breaking forward and ultimately the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation in 2021.
Early Career and Spanish Foundations
Eto'o began his European trajectory at Real Madrid's youth academy in 1997. Due to regulations concerning non-EU players, he spent time on loan at Leganés and Espanyol. He eventually moved to Mallorca, where he set a club record of 70 goals. His performances there included key contributions in the 2003 Copa del Rey, eventually leading to a permanent transfer and establishing his reputation in La Liga.
Success at Barcelona
Signing for Barcelona in 2004 for €24 million, Eto'o became a cornerstone of the team’s attack. He scored 130 goals during his five seasons there. His tenure included winning three La Liga titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies in 2006 and 2009. He remains the second player to score in two separate Champions League finals. His individual recognition included winning the 2006 Pichichi Trophy and multiple African Footballer of the Year awards.

In 2009, Eto'o joined Inter Milan, where he achieved consecutive European continental trebles. His international career with Cameroon was equally decorated, featuring gold at the 2000 Olympics and victories in the 2000 and 2002 Africa Cup of Nations. He participated in four World Cups and holds the record for the most goals in Africa Cup of Nations history with 18, retiring from international play in 2014.
Later Career and Administration
Following his time in Italy, Eto'o played for Anzhi Makhachkala, Chelsea, Everton, Sampdoria, and Antalyaspor, where he recorded 44 goals in 76 league games. He received the Golden Foot Award in 2015 and the Order For Merit to the Republic of Dagestan in 2014. Since 2021, he has served as the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation, overseeing domestic football operations.
