Born Salmah binti Ismail on 22 January 1935 in Pasir Panjang, Saloma emerged as a significant figure in the mid-century Malay entertainment industry. Beyond her recognition as a performer, she cultivated a distinct identity through her vocal range and fashion, eventually becoming a staple of cinema and music in Malaysia during the late 1950s and 1960s.

Early Exposure and Radio Success

Saloma began performing at age five with local street bands. Her professional trajectory shifted in 1949 when her stepfather introduced her to the New World Cabaret. After success there, she gained broader attention on Radio Malaya, where she replaced singer Rokiah Hanafi. Her rendition of the song Sang Rang Bulan helped cement her reputation, leading to further work with various Singaporean orchestras.

Transition into Cinema

In the early 1950s, Saloma worked with the Nusantara Film Company, appearing in productions such as Pelangi, Perkahwinan Rahsia, and Norma. She later transitioned to Malay Film Productions, where she starred in Empat Isteri. Her cinematic reach expanded significantly in the 1960s with roles in Seniman Bujang Lapok, Ragam P. Ramlee, and Ahmad Albab, where she portrayed the character Mastura.

Musical Discography and Recognition

Signed to EMI, Saloma released several extended plays, including Dendang Saloma in 1957, Bunga Negara in 1963, and Aslirama in 1972. She was noted for a vocal quality described as lemak merdu. In 1978, she received the title Biduana Pertama Negara for her contributions to the national music scene. She was also a member of Panca Sitara, a band led by P. Ramlee.

Personal Life and Final Years

Saloma was married to A.R. Tompel and later to P. Ramlee. Her career faced interruptions, including a departure from the film industry in 1953. She passed away on 25 April 1983 at Assunta Hospital at the age of 48. She was interred at the Jalan Ampang Muslim Cemetery.
