Early Career in Chile
Born on 14 October 1979 in Santiago, Tello developed within the youth ranks of Colo-Colo between 1992 and 1995. He transitioned to Club Universidad de Chile, where he made his professional debut in 1999. During his two-year stint with the club, he secured the Chilean Primera División title in both 1999 and 2000, alongside the 2000 Copa Chile, establishing himself as a top domestic talent.

In January 2001, Tello moved to Sporting Clube de Portugal for a fee of €7 million, a record for the club at the time. Over six seasons, he contributed to the 2001-02 Primeira Liga title and won the Taça de Portugal twice. He subsequently transferred to the Turkish Süper Lig in 2007, joining Beşiktaş. His tenure there included a double-winning 2008-09 season and selection to the Team of the Season. Following his time in Istanbul, he played for Eskişehirspor from 2010 to 2014, Elazığspor, and Şanlıurfaspor.
International Representation
Tello earned international recognition as part of the Chilean side that secured a bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. Throughout his decade-long tenure with the national team, he appeared in the 2007 Copa América, reaching the quarter-finals, and participated in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where he played in the round-of-16 defeat to Brazil. He concluded his playing career after returning to Chile to join Audax Italiano in 2015.
