Academic Foundations and Exile

Between 1979 and 1998, Arocena contributed approximately 40 articles regarding functional and harmonic analysis, including work on unary operators. His intellectual focus shifted significantly in 1990 when he secured a second doctorate from the Central University of Venezuela, this time in development studies. He later served as a Professor of Science and Development at the Faculty of Science, authoring 16 books and over 30 articles centered on technology, the dynamics of scientific practice, and the experiences of exile.
University Administration
Arocena rose to the position of rector of the University of the Republic following a contentious selection process in the General Assembly of the Senate. In the final, third vote, he secured the role against fellow mathematician Roberto Markarian. His candidacy received significant backing from the Federation of University Students of Uruguay, while Markarian held the support of the Teacher's Association of the University of the Republic. Beyond his administrative duties, the LGBT collective Ovejas Negras designated him as Person of the Year in 2007.
