Roberto Cavalli

Italian fashion designer (1940–2024)

A patented printing process on leather, developed by Roberto Cavalli in the early 1970s, redefined luxury textiles and secured his initial commissions from firms including Hermès and Pierre Cardin. This innovation served as the foundation for a fashion empire characterized by exotic prints, animal patterns, and the introduction of sand-blasted denim to global runways.

Early Development and Technique

Born in Florence on 15 November 1940, Cavalli studied textile print at a local art institute. During his youth, he generated floral designs on knit fabrics that drew interest from Italian hosiery manufacturers. His grandfather, Giuseppe Rossi, was a painter associated with the Macchiaioli Movement whose work appeared in the Uffizi Gallery. Cavalli experienced significant personal loss in 1944 when his father perished in the Cavriglia massacre.

Establishing the Fashion House

At age 32, Cavalli presented his first collection at the Salon for Prêt-à-Porter in Paris, followed by a presentation at the Sala Bianca of Palazzo Pitti in Florence. He founded the Roberto Cavalli fashion house in 1975. By 1994, he debuted sand-blasted jeans in Milan, expanding his retail footprint to locations including Saint-Tropez, Saint Barth, and Venice. His brand portfolio eventually grew to include youth-oriented labels like Just Cavalli, children’s lines, and specialized collections for footwear, eyewear, and home goods.

Brand Expansion and Corporate Changes

By 2014, the main Roberto Cavalli line maintained a presence in over 50 countries. The business navigated several ownership transitions, including potential stake sales to Investcorp and a 2019 acquisition by Hussain Sajwani’s DAMAC Properties. In 2026, Marquee Brands acquired the entity. Throughout this period, the brand collaborated with various creative directors, including Paul Surridge, and engaged prominent models such as Laetitia Casta and Karen Elson.

Controversies and Legal Challenges

The company faced criticism in 2004 from the Hindu community regarding an underwear line featuring images of goddesses, leading to the collection's withdrawal and a formal apology. Additionally, the Maktab Tarighat Oveyssi Shahmaghsoudi school of Islamic Sufism challenged the Just Cavalli logo, claiming it infringed upon their emblem. The Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market ruled in 2014 that the logos were not mistakable.
