Early Development and Education
The son of Carl Christoffer Ekman and Sara Elisabet Gadolin, Robert Ekman faced instability following the death of both parents when he was ten years old. His initial artistic instruction came from Gustaf Wilhelm Finnberg. In 1824, he moved to Stockholm with his brother Fredric to enroll at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts. During his time under the tutelage of Johan Gustaf Sandberg, he moved away from academic classicism, focusing instead on depictions of common life. He completed his formal studies in 1836.

Upon graduation, Ekman received a traveling scholarship that facilitated his work across the Netherlands, France, and Italy between 1837 and 1844. To secure this funding, he obtained Swedish citizenship. Following his return to Stockholm in 1844, he gained admission to the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts and received the designation of royal court and history painter. He officially regained his Finnish citizenship in 1855, ten years after settling in Turku.
Ecclesiastical Commissions and Teaching
Returning to Turku in 1845, Ekman commenced work on the frescoes for the Turku Cathedral, a project that occupied him until 1854. His career was marked by a high volume of religious output, encompassing over 30 altarpieces for churches in locations including Helsinki, Sääksmäki, Viitasaari, Sauvon, Oulu, Tammela, Vaasa, Pori, Paimio, Tyrvää, and Perelt. Parallel to his painting, he collaborated with Carl Gustaf Söderstrand to advance art instruction. In 1846, he founded the Turku School of Drawing, overseeing its operations until his death in 1873.
