Academic and Technical Background
Golob completed his secondary education at Nova Gorica Grammar School before advancing to the University of Ljubljana. He earned his doctorate in electrical engineering in 1994. In 2004, Golob assumed the role of chairman at GEN-I, a state-controlled energy trading company, a position he held until 2021. His political involvement began in the late 1990s, serving as State Secretary at the Ministry of Economic Affairs under Prime Minister Janez Drnovšek from 1999 to 2000. He maintained a local presence for two decades, serving on the City Council of Nova Gorica from 2002 until 2022 and chairing the neighborhood assembly of Kromberk-Loke between 2010 and 2014.
Prime Ministership 2022–2026
In 2022, Golob took control of the Green Actions Party, rebranding it as the Freedom Movement. Following the 2022 parliamentary election, his party secured 41 of 90 seats. Forming a coalition with the Social Democrats and The Left, he was appointed Prime Minister on 25 May 2022. His administration oversaw the legalization of same-sex marriage in October 2022 and implemented a structural reorganization of ministries, expanding the cabinet to 19 portfolios.
Foreign Policy and NATO Relations
During his tenure, Golob’s foreign policy included the 2024 announcement regarding the recognition of a Palestinian state and the imposition of sanctions on Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich in 2025. In May 2026, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte addressed a formal letter to Golob, challenging the government's defense spending data and accusing the administration of failing to meet the two percent of GDP investment threshold, which the Prime Minister's Office defended by citing a broader interpretation of security requirements.
