Early Career and Theatre
After graduating from New Rochelle High School in 1961, Roundtree attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He withdrew in 1963 to pursue an acting career, initially working as a model for the Ebony Fashion Fair, where he was scouted by Eunice W. Johnson. His early advertising work included campaigns for Duke hair grease and Salem cigarettes. By 1967, he joined the Negro Ensemble Company, earning his first theatrical role as boxer Jack Johnson in The Great White Hope. In 1969, he performed in the Off-Off-Broadway production Mau Mau Room at St. Mark's Playhouse.

Roundtree’s transition to film began with a minor role in the 1970 production What Do You Say to a Naked Lady? His breakthrough followed in 1971 with the title role in Shaft. He reprised the character in three sequels: Shaft's Big Score! in 1972, Shaft in Africa in 1973, and subsequent returns in 2000 and 2019. Between 1973 and 1974, he also starred in the eponymous television series aired by CBS. His performance established a new standard for black leading men, presenting a persona that was bold and assertive.
Television and Film Versatility
His filmography includes roles in the 1974 disaster epic Earthquake and the 1981 war film Inchon. In 1984, he acted alongside Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood in City Heat. His television work included a role in the 1977 miniseries Roots and the soap opera Generations, where he appeared from 1989 to 1991. Later appearances included the 1995 film Seven, the 2004 series Desperate Housewives, and the series Being Mary Jane. His final film projects were Moving On in 2023 and the posthumously released Thelma in 2024.
Personal Life and Health
Roundtree married Mary Jane Grant in 1963, with whom he had two children before their 1973 divorce. He later married Karen M. Ciernia in 1980, and they had three children before divorcing in 1998. In 1993, he received a diagnosis of breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy and chemotherapy. He died on October 24, 2023, in Los Angeles, at the age of 81, following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
