A spontaneous purchase of a guitar in Czechoslovakia during his teenage years set Richard Kruspe on a path that would eventually define his career as a German rock musician. By blending machine-like rhythms with heavy guitar riffs, he helped establish the sonic signature of the Neue Deutsche Härte genre, a sound that has resonated across eight studio albums with Rammstein and four records with Emigrate.
Early Development and Escape
Born in Wittenberge in 1967 as Sven Kruspe, he spent his youth moving between Weisen and Schwerin. His early musical education included four years of jazz guitar training at a conservatorium in Schwerin. Following a period living in East Berlin during the late 1980s, Kruspe was caught in a political demonstration on 10 October 1989. After six days of detention, he fled East Germany by traveling through Hungary, only returning to the region after the Berlin Wall collapsed.

Kruspe began his professional musical trajectory with bands like Das Elegante Chaos, Orgasm Death Gimmick, and First Arsch, the latter featuring Till Lindemann and Paul Landers. A 1992 trip to the United States sparked his interest in merging mechanical soundscapes with heavy guitar work. In 1993, he collaborated with roommates Oliver Riedel and Christoph Schneider under the name Tempelprayers. The group secured a professional recording session after winning a 1994 Berlin Senate Metrobeat contest, and soon added Landers and Christian Lorenz to form Rammstein.
Artistic Ventures and Equipment
Alongside his work with Rammstein, Kruspe launched the industrial metal project Emigrate. His technical approach to sound relies on a long-standing partnership with ESP Guitars, dating back to the acquisition of his first 901 model in 1990. Over his career, he transitioned from using various signature and stock ESP guitars to developing his own RZK series instruments. His studio and stage setups have historically featured Mesa/Boogie amplifiers and cabinets, complemented by Fishman Fluence pickups.
