Academic and Early Professional Foundation
Raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, during the 1970s, Lesser pursued technical training before entering the business world. Lesser joined the Boston Consulting Group in 1988, marking the start of a long-term association with the firm. His early contributions focused on strategy, operations, and large-scale transformation. Between 2000 and 2009, he managed the New York Metro office system, later serving as the chairman for North and South America from 2009 to 2012. He gained a seat on the firm's executive committee in 2006.
Strategic Leadership and Growth
Upon succeeding Hans-Paul Bürkner as Global CEO in 2012, Lesser implemented strategies that effectively tripled the firm's revenue and doubled the global workforce to exceed 22,000 employees. His organizational expansion included the launch of BCG Digital Ventures, BCG Gamma, and BCG TURN. He further established the Center for Climate & Sustainability and co-founded the Southern Communities Initiative alongside PayPal and Vista Equity Partners.
Advisory and External Roles
Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Lesser has held advisory positions with global organizations. He currently acts as chief advisor to the World Economic Forum's Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders and maintains membership on the President's Export Council. His previous involvement with external groups included participation in a business forum under the administration of Donald Trump, which he left in 2017, and service on the Board of Directors of the Business Roundtable.
