Retno Marsudi

Retno Marsudi became the first woman to serve as Indonesia's Minister of Foreign Affairs upon her appointment in 2014, a position she held for a decade. Born in Semarang in 1962, she established a professional trajectory characterized by extensive international postings and a deep engagement with multilateral economic and environmental cooperation across multiple Indonesian administrations.

Early Diplomatic Career

Marsudi graduated from Gadjah Mada University in 1985 before completing basic diplomatic training in 1986. She joined the foreign ministry in 1987, initially focusing on ASEAN cooperation. Her first overseas assignment placed her in Canberra, Australia, from 1990 to 1992. Throughout the 1990s, she managed environmental issues within the directorate of multilateral economic cooperation and held various positions at the Indonesian embassy in the Netherlands.

Ambassadorial Postings

In 2005, she transitioned to the role of Indonesian Ambassador to Norway and Iceland, serving until 2008. During this period, she engaged in advanced studies at the University of Oslo. She later returned to the Netherlands as Ambassador in 2012, holding that position until 2014. Her diplomatic work during these years included managing bilateral consultations with EU members and representing Indonesia in various multilateral forums.

Foreign Ministry Leadership

Appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2014 by President Joko Widodo, Marsudi served through two administrations until 2024. Her tenure involved directing national responses to global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, she acted as a co-chair of the COVAX Advance Market Commitment Engagement Group to facilitate vaccine access for lower-middle income economies. By 2023, she led the Office of Special Envoy to Myanmar, attempting to implement the Five-Point Consensus.

Post-Ministerial Appointment

Following the conclusion of her ministerial tenure, Marsudi transitioned to a global role within the United Nations. In 2024, UN Secretary-General António Guterres selected her to serve as his Special Envoy on Water. This appointment marked a continuation of her involvement in international environmental and multilateral policy, drawing upon her decades of experience in navigating complex global diplomatic frameworks.
