He maintained this position for thirty years, until his retirement in August 2000. During this time, he mentored a generation of scholars, including Peter Apers, Martin L. Kersten, Frank Dignum, Roel Wieringa, and Frances Brazier, helping shape the trajectory of computer science education within the Netherlands.

Van de Riet is widely identified for his creation of COLOR-X, an event modeling language grounded in linguistic principles. Developed throughout the mid-1990s in collaboration with J.F.M. Burg, this framework sought to improve object modeling by incorporating natural language structures.
